HM Calendar Book Pages

In 2008 our district adopted a new math series from Houghton Mifflin. The series had a lot of new vocabulary so I wanted to make some pages to add to our Calendar Book. With these pages we can review the new concepts on a daily basis.

Math Mountains - Math Mountains are a great way to practice combinations. We made the mountains to match the date. One child would choose the combination we were going to use that day.

More Less Grids- We used these to practice the 10s grid as well as more and less. I would give the kids a number to write in the top box. They would have to color in that many dots. In the bottom box they have to color in any number that is less than what the top number is. Then the kids have to turn to a partner and read what they colored in. For example - 7 on top and 3 on bottom. They would say "7 is more than 3. 3 is less (fewer) than 7."

Flash - days in School - This page helps me remember to flash how many days we have been in school. For example: On the 65th day of school the kids have to look on the 120s chart (part of the HM math series - they have one in their book) and find 65. They then have to figure out how many 10s and ones are in 65. Then we write 65 = 60 + 5 in our books. Then we "Flash" it with our hands. We flash 10 fingers 6 times while saying, "65 = 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60" and then we show each 1 with single fingers. "62, 62, 63, 64, 65."

Flash - Match the Domino - In May we draw a domino each day and figure out the number in 10s and 1s. For example a 4 dot and 6 dot domino would be 46. The kids would write 46 = 40 + 6. Then we would flash it with our fingers.

5 Dots 10 Frame Page - HM really focuses on how 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 are 5 plus another number. I added this page so we would practice every day. I would pick a number between 5 - 10 (it doesn't have anything to do with anything.) The kids would have to color in the 10s frame and write the number sentence.
